Foundation Christmas Festival Raises Over $8,000 for Hospital

“We are absolutely delighted to announce that the Foundation’s First Christmas Festival raised $8,128 in support of current Houlton Regional Hospital medical needs.  We wish to extend to everyone who made a presentation with so much beauty and work put into them our deepest gratitude for such a tremendous outpouring of support for our hospital and made it such a Huge Success.

Eighteen trees, ten wreaths and one awesome wooden snowman made Houlton Regional Hospital an extremely festive place to visit during the two weeks these presentations were on display.  Over 4,000 tickets were sold and you could just feel the excitement when people talked about all the work and beauty that the donors had achieved with their special Christmas works.  Tree #19 on display was a wonderful wooden tree made by Katahdin Forest Products and was the Foundation’s Gift Card Tree.  Our goal was to have the tree reach $1,000 in gift cards by the end of the event and once again our incredibly generous communities showed us we could do even better than that and topped the North Pole Indicator at $1,306.  The lucky winner walked away with a great start for their shopping and giving.  Six other lucky winners were very surprised when they found out that not only did they win a tree or a wreath but one of the six Secret Surprise pieces of jewelry offered.  The whole event was just so exciting this year and many of our participants are already planning for next year.  We also have two new participants for next year as well, so we look forward to growth and more beauty to be presented in 2017,” said Elizabeth Dulin, Foundation Executive Director.

Another highlight for the event was a Silent Auction which displayed five beautiful Santa’s by designer Karen Didion and generously donated by the Sturbridge Yankee Workshop in Portland, Maine.  An additional big, gorgeous Santa and an Advent Box rounded out the offering for this part of the event.

“Proceeds will support Phase II of the Foundations current $350,000 campaign to provide 24 pieces of equipment over 12 hospital departments.  This Phase encompasses the Emergency Room, Operating Room, Cardiac Rehab, Obstetrics/Delivery, Physical/Occupational Therapy and Ambulatory Surgery.  It is the objective of the Foundation to be sure to assist the hospital with their funding requests, and given the rural nature of our communities it is imperative we stay as state-of-the-art as possible so all those needing our services will have them close at hand,” Dulin said.

County Open raises $20,000

A total of $20,000 was generated for the Health Services Foundation’s fundraising efforts from the 26th Annual County Open.
“This is a wonderful time that everyone who participates looks forward to,” said Elizabeth Dulin, Foundation executive director. “There is an awesome camaraderie that takes place over this very special weekend and even Mother Nature did a great job of providing perfect weather for all the golfers.”

The gala dinner saw a large turnout that enjoyed a meal presentation by Nancy Levin and her staff at The Horn Restaurant. Tony Bowers was emcee for the night, providing lighthearted humor during the raffle drawing, and Paul LaPointe gave the evening some background musical fare.

“For the past five years, Jackie White has been the committee chair and her dedication to this event can only be summarized as outstanding,” Dulin noted.

This year committee members continued to work hard under new chair Don Collins, along with White, Bob Anderson, Kelly Ashley, Dewey DeWitt, Vickie Hagerman, Heidi Hollis, Ben Lynds, Greg Palmer, Warren and Scot Walker to make sure everything was done just right to make this event go smoothly.

“There is a lot of work that goes into putting on this kind of effort and it simply would not be accomplished without the kind of dedication they all put forth,” Dulin said. “We are so grateful to Bob Anderson for beginning this fundraiser in 1989 and since then the County Open has raised $540,000 in support of the
Foundation’s mission of ‘Excellence in Health Care’ to all those it serves. There are never enough ways to say ‘thank you’ to everyone that participates year after year in so many different capacities, and our sponsors for they all make it possible, all adding up to an amazing testament in generous giving”, said Dulin.

This year County Open funds will be used in support of Phase I of a threephase campaign to bring 24 pieces of equipment/services over 12 different departments to Houlton Regional Hospital. Phase I will focus on a new coagulation instrument for the laboratory. This instrument performs tests to evaluate patients for bleeding abnormalities, monitoring anticoagulant therapy (coumadin and heparin), and checking patients for blood clots.
Another unit is the FUJI PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System), for radiology that enables the radiologist to read off the computer monitors in his office any study that has been done within the department. The system also has the ability to send images over the internet to other facilities for reading.
A medical records “Fusion” voice dictation system will be an upgraded dictation management solution which automates dictation tasks, provides easy to use applications that are flexible and  is customizable to the needs of Houlton Regional.

“The generous County Open support has played a vital role in bringing nuclear medicine, digital mammography, radiology and pediatric expansions, a handicapped accessible van, the Education Center for Community Health, and so much more to Houlton Regional Hospital,” Dulin said.

FOUNDATION CHARITY AUCTION

SATURDAY, MAY 10, 2014

“THE HORN RESTAURANT WILL BE NEW VENUE for Year Four of the Foundation’s Charity Auction, and is shaping up to be another great night out for all those who love the thrill of hearing their number called for Sold on the item they really wanted.  This year will be no exception with a fabulous line-up of items to be offered, some great laughs with our regular auctioneer Norris Oakes of Bangor and changes made in the setup all making for a fun night.  Moving this event up to The Horn Restaurant, will allow several days of setup time, on-site Hors d’ oeuvres, a cash bar, and tables where people can sit, keep track of their bids, and get some good old friendly rivalry going throughout the room when our bidders want to be the winner.

We extend to York’s of Houlton a great deal of thanks for letting us hold this event for the past three years at the dealership.  Their generosity got this event off on a really good footing and our new venue is just up the road a bit and just as easy to get to.  Also thanks to Joyce Transue who did a great job of bringing all the food and drinks for the night.  These efforts were more than appreciated by all of us,” said Elizabeth Dulin, Health Services Foundation,” Executive Director.  .

Current Foundation’s fundraising efforts will be focused on ~ Gentle Imaging – a new Ultrasound System for Houlton Regional Hospital ~.  This new system will bring to Houlton Regional the optimum in Ultrasound services.  Access to ultrasound could mean the gift of life to patients, image patients of various ages, sizes and encompasses a wide range of clinical areas.  Exams will assist in early diagnosis, treatment and patient follow-up.

“In addition to the number of pieces being donated by so many wonderful artists/craftsmen in our area, a number of items in this years event came from Goodrich’s Jewelry and will offer, “One More Chance” to own something that was in the store.  There will be delightful items especially for him, for her and for all kinds of occasions.  Delighting your taste buds this year will have everyone raising their paddles in pursuit of some really decadent edibles.

This night is a fun filled auction event and we know everyone will be pleased by a somewhat new lineup this year.  Items will fit everyone’s pocketbook so when the evening ends their will be lots of smiles as our winners pick up just the right piece(s) they wanted.  Items will be available for viewing on our website at www.healthservicesfoundation.org which lists current donated pieces and the site will be updated as more items are added, so visit and enjoy,” said Dulin.

The Foundation takes enormous pride in what we do to support our hospital, and work on a daily basis, to make sure that support never stops.  The world of healthcare can be a difficult one especially in rural areas such as ours, and it is imperative we keep our focus on keeping our hospital operating with the very best in services,” Dulin continued.

Charity auction raises $10,000

The Health Services Foundation held its third annual charity auction May 18 at Yorks of Houlton. Items such as these helped raise $10,000 for the Foundation.

The Health Services Foundation held its third annual charity auction May 18 at Yorks of Houlton. Items such as these helped raise $10,000 for the Foundation.

HOULTON — The Health Services Foundation’s third Charity Auction turned out to be a great night for everyone who attended and when all was said and done $10,000 had been raised in support of new medical equipment for Houlton Regional Hospital.

“Once again York’s of Houlton showroom provided the backdrop for a comfortable/fun evening, with Joyce Transue, owner of the Courtyard Café, catering the event with delightful refreshments for people as they previewed what was being offered,” said Elizabeth Dulin, Foundation executive director.“The artistic talent of local, Native American as well as the state of Maine was presented in a very beautiful line-up of very special pieces. We were fortunate enough to have all four of our Maine Native American Tribes, the Maliseet, MicMac, Passamaquoddy and Penobscot donating wonderful exhibitions of their work.  Over one hundred pieces consisting of Textiles, Leather, Paintings, Prints, Jewelry, Baskets, Wood & Metal, Pottery, Beauty, Culinary Delights, Books, Whimsy, & Gift Certificates, provided the audience with many affordable choices.
“We were incredibly fortunate to have Smith & Wesson, once again, donate the coveted 1911 “E” Series firearm, and Gemma Bartley donated a wonderful Old Town Canoe,” Dulin added. “When the night reached the point for those items to go under the gavel, there was a lot of excitement and the bidding went very well.
Dulin said turnout was great considering the weather was beautiful.
“All those who attended were enthusiastic about supporting this Foundation event,” she said. “All the wonderful pieces that were donated say a lot about the generosity of our communities and we deeply thank all of them as well as all those who helped us pull the whole evening together. We are comprised of small communities, and everyone had great choices for events to attend that weekend. All of us not only want success for a specific reason, but to be successful for those who have given so freely making it a tribute to them as well. So, it is our hope that every event that was held during that time did well as all those involved know, just as much as I do, how much hard work goes into each and every one of them.
Norris Oakes returned from the Bangor area as auctioneer, with his winning personality that had the crowd smiling and laughing throughout the evening. As with last year’s event, a great deal of effort was put into planning/collecting the items.
“The level of generosity was absolutely incredible,” said Dulin.
The Foundation has been fundraising for Houlton Regional Hospital and other health care providers since 1983 and continues to do so in an effort to see positive results in the purchase of equipment, educational programs, and capital needs which are assisted to the best of its financial ability.
“The Foundation has been so fortunate through the years as we are constantly fundraising for the health and well being of our communities and the success of our auction means we can continue doing that to the very best of our ability,” Dulin said. “We are so very grateful to those who joined us as ‘Excellence in Health Care’ to all those we serve just keeps getting better because of all the great people who live, work, play and call this wonderful place home.
